Roger Waters extends Warner/Chappell publishing deal

by cmumusicnews 24. August 2010 13:22

Roger Waters has re-signed his publishing contract with Warner/Chappell Music. The deal means the Warner Music publishing arm will continue to administer the musician's Pink Floyd rights song rights from the band's fifth studio album, 'Atom Heart Mother', to 1983's 'The Final Cut', Waters' last album with the band.

Announcing the renewed deal, Warner/Chappell UK MD Richard Manners said: "Roger is an iconic songwriter, lyricist and musician. Each generation discovers these phenomenal albums anew, and their wide-reaching influence and popularity continues to grow. We're delighted Roger entrusts these songs to Warner/Chappell on a global basis, and we're looking forward to the work ahead, especially with much-anticipated 'The Wall' dates on the horizon".

Coyle latest act to do Tesco exclusivity deal

by cmumusicnews 23. August 2010 11:17

Nadine Coyle is the latest singer to enter into an exclusivity deal with Tesco. Following on from Simply Red and Faithless, the Girl Aloud will make her debut solo album available exclusively via the supermarket giant. Coyle had originally been working with Universal Music on her solo debut, but sources say she opted for a deal with the retail firm instead because they were happy to leave her and her management to sort out the creative side of the venture.

The Mirror quotes a source as follows: "Being able to work on the music that she wants was the main reason for going with Tesco. She's decided who she's wanted to work with from the start. She's in control of every single decision - from the writers, the producers and the collaborators - and wants to produce her dream album. She didn't want to be a puppet for a record company".

Joker signs Universal Publishing deal

by cmumusicnews 19. August 2010 14:11

Bristol dubstep producer Joker has signed a deal with Universal Music Publishing, his manager Charles Holgate (aka MC Nomad) announced on Tuesday night. Holgate posted a picture of a post-signing meal with the Universal team to Twitter, before Joker revealed that they'd all got very drunk and introduced the publishers to "a place called the black hole". I'm not sure if that affects the deal.

Along with the rapidly growing success of the likes of Magnetic Man, this deal would seem to put a definitive stamp of dubstep having now gone mainstream. Therefore, this would seem like a good time for us all to listen to Drowned In Sound's Dubstep Chronology mixtape: drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4140731-25-tracks--a-dubstep-chronology-mixtape

Coldplay re-sign to Universal Publishing

by cmumusicnews 17. August 2010 11:37

Universal's music publishing company yesterday confirmed it had renewed its relationship with Coldplay, having been the band's publishers since 1999. Universal Music Publishing already oversee the band's songs catalogue, including all those indie pop classics like, erm, you know, that one, err, the slightly whiny one. Oh that's right, that's all of them. Well, under the new deal Universal will enjoy rights over all of Coldplay's future whininess too. This is a cause for celebration.

And look, here's Universal Publishing UK top man Paul Connolly celebrating. He told CMU: "Coldplay define all that's great about music today. They're incredibly talented, they write fantastic songs, and they deliver amazing shows to their fans. They've sold over 50 million albums worldwide and their huge success is entirely deserved. We're obviously very proud to be Coldplay's publisher so it's great that we've been able to extend our relationship with them in this way".

Producer RedOne signs label deal with Universal

by cmumusicnews 10. August 2010 13:10

Grammy winning producer and songwriter RedOne, who has worked with such stars as Michael Jackson, Sean Kingston, Enrique Iglesias and Akon, and is best known of late for producing Lady Gaga's 'Bad Romance', has done a deal with Universal Music which will see him running his own imprint label with the major.

The label, called 2101, will sit under Universal Music International, with RedOne signing and producing new talent. First on the roster is singer-songwriter Mohombi, who has been jetting between studios in LA and Stockholm to write and record his debut album.

Announcing his new deal with Universal, RedOne told CMU: "I am so privileged to be in business with the Universal family in this new venture. We already have had so much success together, I know that this is the best home for my music and for my artists. Lucian [Grainge] and I share a common vision for creating sounds and platforms for new artists, not only writing hit songs, but building brands. We are incredibly fortunate to be launching with an artist like Mohombi, who has so much potential. He is a powerhouse talent ... writing, singing, performing, dancing... a true entertainer. Mohombi lifts my spirits and I believe he will elevate the world with his music".

The first single from Mohombi's album, entitled 'Bumpy Ride', will be release on 4 Oct, distributed through Universal/Island in the UK.

Skindred sign to BMG Rights Management

by cmumusicnews 9. August 2010 13:15

Ragga metallers Skindred have signed a worldwide publishing deal with BMG Rights Management, it has been announced.

The deal covers all songs written by the band to date, as well as their work individually, such as frontman Benji Webbe's co-songwriting credit on Bullet For My Valentine's 'Take It Out On Me'.

Skindred's manager Seven Webster of 7pm Management told CMU: "We are really excited to be working with Tony Moss and the worldwide BMG Rights Management team. After all the recent nominations the band have received at various awards in the last couple of weeks and seeing the band play to around 40,000 people at the weekend at Knebworth it helps highlight the importance of this act as a fast growing global concern and this deal is a key part in our strategy going forwards".

Tony Moss of BMG Rights Management added: "This is a great deal for us as we have nothing like them in the roster - but then I'm not sure there is anyone like them! They're a fantastic band with great songs and a phenomenal fanbase".

Libertine does deal with Power Amp

by cmumusicnews 9. August 2010 13:13

That Carl Barat fella (described as "former Libertines frontman" in the press release, don't know if they know something we don't about the upcoming reunion) has done a deal with music investment types Power Amp Music, who take hard cash off city types and invest it directly into artist projects. Past investees (if there were such a word) include Madness and Charlotte Church.

The half a million deal will fund various Barat solo projects, and will see the investment vehicle share in various revenue streams generated. Says Power Amp top man Tom Bywater: "I am delighted to have agreed this new deal with Carl Barat who is one of the leading talents of his generation. I have great faith in Carl and his excellent management team at Various Artists - strong artist management is critical to Power Amp's 'artist-centric' model, where the managers effectively become CEO's of their artists own company".

David Bianchi of the there mentioned Various Artists Management added: "Of all the new models that are emerging Power Amp Music just made sense to Carl and I. Getting the level of investment needed whilst still being incentivised by earning from all income streams from day one is a no brainer really. The model allows Carl to hold onto all his rights both in terms of copyright and publishing which was very important to him and means we can do short term licence and admin deals in both areas where we see fit".

Weezer sign to Epitaph

by cmumusicnews 5. August 2010 14:47

Weezer have signed a new record deal with Epitaph, after splitting from Geffen last December. They will release a new album, entitled 'Hurley', in September.

The news was broken via Twitter, with Epitaph boss Brett Gurewitz posting: "Rivers, Pat, Brian and Scott, welcome to Epitaph homies! FT=W=". FTW being something The Kids write in text messages and online discussion forums, while =W= is the band's online abbreviation, right? And homies is short for 'homeboys', and 'homeboy' means 'a very good friend'. Oh, and Rivers, Pat, Brian and Scott are the first names of the members of Weezer. I'm glad we've got all this cleared up.

Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo then tweeted: "Hey, Weezer is happy to announce our signing to Epitaph Records and release of new album 'Hurley' on 14 Sep".

An official statement is expected shortly. Though that's not to say either of these men were lying.

Brian Eno signs to warp

It looks like Brian Eno has signed a new deal with Warp Records. Either that or the holding page currently up on the label and Eno's own websites are incredibly misleading.

The website announces: "BRIAN ENO COMING SOON ON WARP RECORDS". Which does sound like something by Brian Eno will be coming out via Warp Records soon, doesn't it?

Nuns threatened over Decca deal

by cmumusicnews 30. July 2010 12:20

There were reports in the French media yesterday that the nuns who signed a deal with Universal Music's Decca Records earlier this week had received "death threats" as a result of them going into business with the music giant, though on closer inspection the threats did come via comments left on a YouTube page, so possibly aren't too serious.

Nevertheless, according to Le Provence the convent where the Benedictine nuns live has reported the threats to local police. A short video of the nuns singing Gregorian chants had been posted on YouTube and it was there that the threats, written in English, were posted.

As previously reported, because the nuns must shun all contact with the outside world, Decca's record contract had to be handed to them through a wooden grille. Meanwhile record producers will never be in the same room as the nuns while the album is recorded.

Nuns sign to Decca

by cmumusicnews 26. July 2010 12:21

I love press reports to the effect that a bunch of French Benedictine nuns have "signed to Lady Gaga's record label", as if acts in contract to Universal's classical division Decca in Europe hang out with artists from the American pop labels elsewhere in the mega-major's empire. No mention that the nuns are also now label mates with the Pope.

Anyway, the French nuns are the latest religious signing to Universal, and have been signed up after a long search for the best God fearing types to sing some Gregorian chants. Anyone worried that, by doing a deal with Lucian's lot, the nuns will be collaborating with the devil, need not worry. St Joseph has given the project the all clear. And we don't mean Universal UK chief David Joseph. No, the real deal.

In a statement, Rev Mother Placide Devillers from the abbey near Avignon where the signed up nuns reside said: "We never sought this, it came looking for us. At first we were worried it would affect our cloistered life, so we asked St Joseph in prayer. Our prayers were answered and we thought that this album would be a good thing if it touches people's lives and helps them find peace".

According to The Guardian, because the nuns must shun all contact with the outside world, the recording contract had to be handed through a wooden grille for an Abbey representative to sign it. And record producers will never be in the same room as the nuns while the album is recorded. Decca MD Dickon Stainer is quoted thus: "Although the nuns do not leave the convent, the whole world will now hear the true beauty of their singing".

Relaunched Blue Horizon signs first band

by cmumusicnews 21. July 2010 10:59

The Blue Horizon record label, which operated for just five years between 1966 and 1971 and is credited with discovering Fleetwood Mac, has announced its first new signing since being relaunched at MIDEM earlier this year.

Now led by Sire Records founders Richard Gottehrer and Seymour Stein, the new incarnation of the company, which eschews its blues roots in favour of launching emerging acts across various genres, is a joint venture between the Warner Music Group and Gottehrer's digital music company The Orchard.

This week, Texas-based psychedelic rock band The Black Angels were announced as the first new band to sign to the label. They will release their third album, 'Phosphene Dream', produced and mixed by Dave Sardy (Oasis, Marilyn Manson, Wolfmother), on 13 Sep

The first track from the album, 'Bad Vibrations', is streaming on the band's website here: theblackangels.com/stream/bad-vibrations/

Discussing the new signing, Seymour Stein told CMU: "Great musicianship and performers, mesmerising vocals, and songs that penetrate the subconscious. That's the best way to describe Black Angels, our first signing to Blue Horizon Records. In everyway the band is perfect choice to relaunch to this iconic label".

Richard Gottehrer added: "Everyone was so receptive when we announced we were bringing Blue Horizon back. We hope they share in our excitement for the great things we have in store in modernising this label to serves as a source of music from emerging artists across genres".

The Black Angels will perform a headline show at The Borderline in London on 26 Aug ahead of appearances at the Reading and Leeds festivals.

Tony Christie signs to Acid Jazz

by cmumusicnews 20. July 2010 10:59

Tony Christie has signed a new record deal with the Acid Jazz label to release his new album, 'Now Is The Time!', which has been written for the singer by Jarvis Cocker.

Acid Jazz boss Eddie Piller told CMU: "Ever since I heard 'Avenues And Alleyways' as a kid, which Christie recorded for Gerry Anderson's cult TV programme 'The Protectors', I've wanted to get him into the studio, and at last I've done it. The massive success of 'Amarillo' a few years ago cemented Tony Christie's iconic status, he's working in his first musical on the West End stage and has put down some killer tunes. I am extremely excited, and once you've heard the material, I reckon you will be too. The spread on the album is amazing, quite filmic but with some nods to Johnny Cash, spaghetti westerns and a classic soul sound".

The album will be released in January next year.
